How Did It Work?
Over Comic-Con weekend, thousands of people lined up outside the Bank of E in the Gaslamp Quarter. Inside, tellers used tablets to register them for Ecoin, and provide them with a shiny new Ecoin Card. Each card was imprinted with a unique QR code paired with the user's account.
In the webapp, users could access a map (powered by MapBox) to find dozens of participating retailers and view a list of all offers.
To facilitate the purchasing process, we also developed an interal iOS application and provided iPhones to our retail partners to use throughout the activation. Using this app, retailers could scan the customer's QR code in order to mark the item as purchased.
Following the success of San Diego Comic-Con, we pivoted the app to focus on “Perks” in order to provide an opportunity for fans around the country to get involved. Throughout Season 3 of Mr. Robot, at undisclosed times, a perk would go live on the Ecoin site. Perks were typically physical items (an Amazon Echo Dot, a hat, branded water bottle, etc), but occasionally we had digital perks as well (exclusive audio/video). Lucky (and fast) fans could claim the perk before it ran out or expired.
